About ID Verification

What is ID Verification?

ID Verification is the process of confirming that a person is who they claim to be. For our members at YouGov, this involves completing a short task via Yoti, our trusted third-party identity verification provider.

During the process, members are asked to securely submit a valid government-issued identification document and take a selfie.

Why have I been asked to verify my identity?

YouGov is committed to accurately and fairly representing the entirety of public opinion - all ages, background and beliefs. We think it is important all voices are heard, and that no one person or group gets to unfairly shape the data by pretending to be someone they are not. Verifying your identity helps us protect you, our community and the research we share with the world.

What is Yoti?

Yoti is a digital identity technology company that provides identity verification services to YouGov. We use Yoti to carry out secure identity checks for members when required.

How does the ID verification process work?

When invited to verify your identity, you will see a Verify your ID task card on your YouGov dashboard. Selecting this card will start the verification process.

Before being redirected to Yoti, you will:

  • See more information about why we are asking you to verify your identity and how your information will be used
  • Enter your name exactly as it appears on the government-issued ID document you plan to use for verification
  • Review information about Yoti and their ID verification service

You will then be redirected to Yoti to complete the verification process, which includes:

  1. Uploading a photo of a valid government-issued ID document. Yoti checks the document to confirm that is genuine and valid
  2. Taking a selfie (face scan). Yoti uses this to confirm that there is a real person behind the camera and to match your selfie to the photo on your ID document.

Once the process is completed, you will be automatically returned to YouGov. The entire process typically takes around 10 minutes.
