This article answers some of the most common questions about YouGov Connections, how it works, and how your data is used.
Do I have to be a YouGov member to use Connections?
Yes. Only YouGov members can take part in Connections and earn points.
- Connections becomes available once the feature has been unlocked on your account.
- Only members who have been invited or unlocked the feature can participate.
- Most members receive an email invitation after completing surveys on a regular basis.
Do I have to share all my online data?
No. You’re always in control of the data you share through Connections.
You can choose which online accounts to connect and can stop sharing data from any source at any time. Nothing is shared unless you explicitly decide to do so.
How do I earn rewards for sharing my data?
You earn points when you successfully connect an account to the platform, and then each time you share data from that source.
Points are also earned by taking part in Connections projects. Some projects reward points when you opt in, while others may reward points for reconnecting or updating data when prompted.
All points earned through Connections are added to your YouGov account and can be redeemed for rewards once you reach the required total.
How often can I share or update my data?
This depends on the data source.
Some sources only need to be connected once, while others may require periodic updates. You’ll always be notified if action is needed to continue earning points.
There’s no limit to the number of projects you can choose to take part in. As long as a project is available and you’re eligible, you can opt in and earn points.
How is my data used?
Your data is mainly used for research purposes, and it is only shared with third parties (anonymously) when you choose to take part in a specific project.
If you don’t join a project, data shared through Connections may be used internally to:
- Improve the Connections feature
- Identify suitable projects you may be interested in
Each project invitation clearly explains:
- What data will be used
- How it will be used
- Who will use it
Your data is shared in an anonymised form, meaning it cannot be used to identify you personally. If a project ever requires identifiable data, you’ll be clearly informed and asked for explicit consent before anything is shared. Whether you choose to take part is entirely up to you.
Can I change my mind?
Yes. You’re always in control of your data.
You can disconnect data sources, revoke project consent, or remove previously shared data at any time through your Connections preferences. If you stop sharing data from a source or project, you’ll no longer earn points from it.
